What is the best type of paint to start art painting with, acrylic or oil?

I want to start painting for artwork. I know very little about oil vs acrylic vs other types. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? What are the costs? What are the equipment requirements/chemical hazards/cleanup difficulties? Which paint holds up best overall and lasts the longest for posterity? Which do you think is the best overall? Thank you.
